As a parent, you want to give your child every advantage—and that starts with healthy vision. Whether it’s seeing the board clearly at school, reading with ease, or feeling confident in the classroom and on the playground, clear and comfortable vision plays a crucial role in your child’s development.

At Vision North Eyecare, we’re passionate about helping kids see their best from the very start. Here’s why so many families choose us for their children’s eye care:

A Child-Friendly Eye Test Experience

Eye tests don’t have to be intimidating! At Vision North Eyecare, we’ve created a calm, welcoming environment where kids feel at ease. Appointments are never rushed—we allow a full 40 minutes so your child has time to settle in, ask questions, and feel comfortable throughout the process.

Instead of using letters (which can be tricky for younger children), we use shapes and pictures to assess their vision, making it easier and more fun for them to participate.

But My Child Isn’t Complaining—Do They Still Need a Test?

Yes—absolutely. Many vision problems in children go unnoticed because kids often assume everyone sees the same way they do. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 1 in 5 children may have an undetected vision issue. Studies have shown that untreated vision problems can significantly impact learning, behaviour and overall development (Birch et al., Vision Research, 2013).

Even if your child doesn’t say anything, early signs of eye strain, focusing issues, or tracking difficulties can still be present—and they may be misinterpreted as learning difficulties or attention problems. A proper eye test can help detect and address these issues before they interfere with school or daily life.

Entertainment While They Wait

Our rooms are designed with kids in mind. While we check their eyes, they can watch a selection of fun and familiar shows—including Bluey, everyone’s favourite! It helps them relax and adds a little fun to the visit.

Experienced in Neurodivergent and Anxious Children

Every child is unique, and our optometrists are experienced in working with neurodivergent children, including those with autism, ADHD, and sensory sensitivities. We adjust our approach to meet your child’s individual needs, using gentle techniques, breaks when needed, and lots of encouragement.

We also offer behavioural optometry consultations, which assess how the eyes move, focus, and process visual information—an area that can be especially important for children with learning or developmental differences (Scheiman & Wick, Clinical Management of Binocular Vision, 2020).

Stylish, Comfortable Kids’ Glasses

If your child does need glasses, we’ve got a wide range of fun and functional kids’ frames—built to fit little faces comfortably and securely. Our team makes sure every pair is specially fitted for maximum comfort and wearability. We’ll also explain how to care for their glasses and help them feel excited about wearing them.

When Should My Child Have an Eye Test?

We recommend a first eye test by age 3, or earlier if you notice any concerns like squinting, rubbing eyes, or poor attention. The Optometry Australia guidelines suggest routine testing during preschool years and again before starting school, as vision can change quickly during growth periods.

A 2021 study published in the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (J AAPOS) found that early detection of refractive error and amblyopia (lazy eye) significantly improves long-term outcomes when intervention happens before age 7.
