Optical Coherence Tomography

At Vision North Eyecare, we prioritize your eye health with the latest advancements in technology. One such innovation is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging technique that allows us to see detailed cross-sections of your retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. OCT allows thickness analysis of these layers and compares your eye readings to the age-normal database.

OCT works much like an ultrasound, but instead of sound waves, it uses light waves to create high-resolution images of the retinal layers. This advanced technology helps us detect and monitor various eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal disorders, often before symptoms appear.

The procedure is quick and painless, taking just a few minutes. During the scan, you’ll be asked to focus on a target while the OCT machine captures detailed images of your retina. These images give us a deeper understanding of your eye health, enabling us to diagnose conditions early and tailor treatments to your specific needs.

Technology

Advanced Imaging Allows Early Diagnosis

OCT can be likened to ultrasound imaging but instead it uses a special light rather than sound waves and offers 15 times the resolution of traditional ultrasound. We use OCT to closely inspect the tissues behind the eye, in particular the retina and optic nerve. It allows for early disease detection and a more specific diagnosis. It is a harmless procedure that takes little time allowing for a quick diagnosis.

On several occasions OCT has allowed us to make early diagnosis of treatable macular degeneration, resulting in speedy treatment. If left to their natural course these conditions would have resulted in irreversible vision loss in a matter of days.

Frequently asked questions:

How do I receive my results from an OCT?
The results are recieved on the spot and our expert optometrists will thoroughly explain the findings to you. If you have seen us before, then we will also show you any previous OCTs for comparison as to how your eyes are going.
Why is OCT important for my eye health?
OCT is an essential tool for early detection and monitoring of various eye conditions. By providing detailed images of your retina, OCT helps us identify issues before they progress to more serious stages. This early detection allows for more effective treatment and better outcomes for your vision and overall eye health.
How is OCT different from Optos Ultrawide retinal imaging?
OCT allows for a 3D view of the retinal tissue layers, whereas Optos Ultrawide retinal imaging gives us a 2D view of the peripheral retina. OCT allows for a more detailed view of the central eye structures, whereas Optos Ultrawide retinal imaging gives us a broad view of the retina. Both technologies detect and help us manage eye disease, but in different ways. Our optometrists will always make a recommendation about what is required for your thorough eye exam.
