Eye Light – LLLT/IPL

Eye light treatment for dry eyes – a modern, gentle approach to treating dry eye.

If you’re constantly reaching for eye drops, struggling with sore or gritty eyes, or finding your vision becomes blurry throughout the day, you’re not alone. Dry eye disease is incredibly common, and for many people, it can have a real impact on daily life.

Eye-Light combines two advanced treatment technologies —Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) — to address the underlying causes of dry eye, rather than simply masking the symptoms. These treatments are gentle, non-invasive, and designed to improve the health of your eyes and eyelids for long-lasting relief.

Whether your symptoms are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), blepharitis, or ocular rosacea, Eye-Light may help you feel more comfortable and see more clearly.

What is the eye light?

Eye-Light is an advanced dry eye treatment system that uses light-based therapy to improve the function of the oil-producing glands in your eyelids (meibomian glands) and reduce inflammation around the eyes. Unlike artificial tears that temporarily replace moisture, Eye-Light aims to improve your eyes’ natural tear production and restore a healthier tear film. Treatment can involve one or both technologies: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – targets inflammation and improves meibomian gland function. Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) – stimulates the eyelids using gentle therapeutic light to promote healing and healthy gland function. Your optometrist will recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on your eye health and the cause of your dry eye symptoms.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)- Gentle Light That Supports Healing

Every treatment plan is tailored to your specific type of dry eye. Based on your results, your optometrist may recommend Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), sometimes called photobiomodulation, uses safe red and near-infrared light delivered through a comfortable treatment mask placed over your closed eyes.

Unlike IPL, LLLT does not produce heat or pulses of light. Instead, it delivers gentle therapeutic light that stimulates the cells within the eyelids.

This helps to:

  • Support healthy meibomian gland function
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Encourage natural healing
  • Improve tear film stability
  • Relieve dry eye symptoms

Many patients find the treatment deeply relaxing and enjoy simply lying back while the light therapy works.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy- Treating the Cause of Dry Eye

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses carefully controlled pulses of light applied to the skin around the lower eyelids and cheeks. Although IPL has been used safely in dermatology for many years, it has become one of the most effective treatments for evaporative dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction.

The light energy helps to:

  • Reduce inflammation around the eyelids
  • Improve the function of blocked meibomian glands
  • Melt thickened oils inside the glands
  • Reduce abnormal blood vessels that contribute to inflammation
  • Improve the quality of your natural tears

As the glands begin functioning more normally, they produce healthier oils that help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.

Why Combine IPL and LLLT?

The two treatments work in different but complementary ways. IPL helps reduce inflammation and clears blocked oil glands, while LLLT supports cellular healing and encourages healthier gland function. Together they provide a comprehensive approach to treating the underlying causes of dry eye disease.

Many patients experience:

  • Greater comfort
  • Less reliance on eye drops
  • Improved tear quality
  • Reduced redness
  • Clearer, more stable vision
  • Healthier eyelids

Frequently asked questions:

How long is my appointment?

We allow 40 minutes for the appointment which allows enough time for the treatment and expression of your meibomium glands by our optometrists.

How many appointments do I need?
For most patients, we recommend an initial course of four treatments, usually spaced 2–4 weeks apart. This allows us to effectively reduce inflammation, improve the function of the meibomian glands, and provide lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

Many patients notice an improvement after their first or second treatment, but the full benefits are usually achieved after completing the recommended course.

Because dry eye disease is often a long-term condition, some patients choose to have maintenance treatments every 6–12 months, depending on their symptoms and your optometrist’s recommendation.

Can I wear make-up to my appointment?

No makeup can be worn to the appointment for Eye lihjy treatments. We offer a cleanser to remove any makeup and also ask that you remove any facial piercings or false lashes around the eyes

Where is the Dry Eye Clinic Located?

Our Eye light treatment is located at our Reservoir clinic.

Do I need a referral for the treatment?

No referral is required.
We recommend a comprehensive dry eye analysis before the appointment which allows us to see if the Eye light is the best treatment for you. If this has been completed at another Optometrist, we ask you provide a report of your dry eye analysis.
