Digital Retinal Photography

Painless and Priceless

Digital retinal photography (DRP) allows us to capture an image of the tissues behind the eye. It is a painless procedure and in most cases does not require pupil dilating drops.

With DRP we are able to capture a high resolution image of the retina and optic nerve assessing for signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and many vascular disorders.

We perform DRP yearly in the 65 and older population because of the greater risk of eye disease and a little less often in younger populations.

Ultrawide retinal imaging

Optos Ultrawide retinal scanning is the latest in retinal imaging allows us to capture an image of the tissues behind the eye. It is an easy, painless procedure and in most cases does not require pupil dilating drops. We are able to capture a high resolution image of the retina and optic nerve assessing for signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and many vascular disorders. In particular, Optos Ultrawide scan allows better assessment of people with diabetes or flashes of light or floaters.

Frequently asked questions:

Is this different from the eye photo I usually have?
Prior to 2023, we used fundus photography to capture images of the retina. We still use this to get high resolution photos of the central retina, which includes important parts of the eye like the optic nerve and macula. The advantage of the Optos Ultrawide retinal scan is that we can see further out to the periphery of the retina- something we could not do with the older technology. It also allows us to use dilating eye drops, which blur the vision for a few hours after the appointment less often.
Who requires retinal imaging?
Our optometrists recommend a baseline Optos Ultrawide retinal scan on your first visit with us, or if you have not had one before. Following this it is recommended yearly for people with conditions such as diabetes or a history of retinal problems. If you have new symptoms such as a suddden onset of new eye floaters or flashes of light in one eye, the Optos Ultrawide retinal scan will also allow a more comprehensive assessment of the problem.
Is there a cost involved?
Speciality scans are unfortunately not covered by a Medicare rebate and attract a small fee when completed, with a concession card holder rate also available. Our optometrists will also let you know when a recommendation for extra testing is made and if there is a cost involved.
